But it will take astute diplomacy, forbearance on the part of the claimants, ASEAN to use its constructive offices, and great powers also to work together to create this new paradigm or grammar in which China’s legitimate rights are safeguarded and those of weaker countries indeed are also safeguarded. And I think that with astute diplomacy, this can be achieved,” says Associate Professor Basil Bitas from Singapore Management University’s School of Law.
